Vilajvilaj The project is being developed in Quebec and in Haiti. U n first prototype container home has been developed in Boisbriand by Nomad Construction firm (with the participation of the architect Ron Rayside). A team of twenty people should leave for Haiti in November to begin building the first village / container. The idea

is to go there to give an initial boost and train workers so that Haitians can become self-sufficient in building their homes and in the establishment of cooperative projects associated. In such projects, each will be involved in the organization by its commitment to participate in the maintenance and sustainability, not only of his own house, but the whole village. This commitment will be essential as it comes to building, from each village, an autonomous and self sufficient.

Haitian workers will be trained, hired and paid. The items included in construction will be made locally wherever possible. The houses will be equipped for more autonomy, solar collectors and tanks that can collect rainwater.

The project is ambitious but it is already running (and without government assistance). Vilajvilaj expects to install 800 houses during the first year, which is expected to accommodate 5,000 people. The idea of building houses from container is not new. An exploration on the Web, we uncovered several types of construction already completed around the world. This ranges from the animal shelter at the residence of students through the cottage, the collapsible canteen and emergency care unit.

Many benefits are associated with the use of container, but what interests us here is the idea of its use in a humanitarian context or, better yet, with intent to sustainable development. The project Vilajvilaj involves implanting villages in Haiti and around the world to help the poorest people.

container houses allow people displaced by disasters to quickly relocated to near their original places of residence. Moreover, the participation of people in the community stages of implementation would offer a continuation and strengthening of social ties.

The general idea of the project is to work together to rebuild a healthy environment and a supportive community.
