Save the iPhoto library on an external drive

You certainly know a few different methods to back up your iPhoto library, including the procedures recommended by Apple to back up your iPhoto photo libraries 6.0 and iPhoto 7.0 (iLife '08) . This method works fine as long as the format of the external drive is formatted as 'Mac' ie HFS + or 'Mac OS Extended', but proves to be a disaster when another format such FAT32 as Windows own system. It is the same if you do your backup server via a Windows or Linux that does not support Mac resource.

To avoid this, I suggest you make this backup in a disk image (. Dmg) from our library using Disk Utility from Apple.
This method has the advantage of being both simple and quick to implement and compatible with any particular file system.

To do this:
  1. Launch Disk Utility, located in Applications / Utilities.
  2. Drag the icon of your library iPhoto (iPhoto Library) to that of 'Disk Utility' in the Dock. (At this moment, a window opens asking you where to save your disk image).

  3. Put you to where you want to save your library, give it a name (eg SVGiPhotoDu30052008) and choose 'read only' opposite 'Format Picture '.

  4. Click the 'Save' button (the backup starts and will materialize in the presence of the file SVGiPhotoDu30052008.dmg, to the location you have selected when it is completed).
Note: The restoration of the library will be dragging the icon in the file saved to its original location (Pictures folder on the left sidebar).

You'd like to find a quick and easy way to upload your iPhoto albums . There is of course the service . Mac Apple but the cost deters you. Fortunately Googl e offers his solution: PicasaWebAlbumsUploaders .

The principle is simple: you download the plugin via the link below dessu s you install it and a tab Picasa web 'will appear in the additional command' File / Export ... ' iPhoto, allowing you to upload your photos or photo albums to Picasa Web Album .

I ndicates then the album name, it must be public or not, check the IDs of your gmail account in 'Sign in' and choose the image size before sending the 'Export' button.

Note: about the size of photos, I'd suggest the 'Faster Upload' which I think is a good compromise for displaying your photos on the Web . The photos generated will have a size of 1000 x 739 pixels with an average weight of 200 to 500 KB of your gmail account is limited to 1 GB, so you can publish between 4000 and 8000 photos for free.
